The Real Hero!

Inspiration comes along in many ways. Sometimes its the goal that pushes us forward, sometimes its the little things that surround life. Mostly, inspiration comes along with will. IGP Jaspal Singh, on the eleventh of April spoke to the students STD XII of Mushtifund Aryaan Higher Secondary, giving them an insight on struggles, the law and proceedings, his experience, and most generally, life. He was warmly welcomed by the Director of the Institute, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai.

Beginning with how the Civil Service in India is different, with it being given constitutional status, he told them that this was because the officers held responsible positions, highlighting on how bureaucracy has been made accountable by this provision. Furthermore, this ensures that there will be no botheration of interference of extraneous political parties, as IGP Singh said.

Moving on, he spoke on how an IPS officer is made. Focusing on the curriculum, the students were enlightened upon the various stages of their training. Once a to-be officer is selected, they undergo training in subjects such as Public Administration, Economics, Law, Fine Arts, Public Speaking, Languages, Film appreciation, Art and Culture, and many more. In between this, for two weeks there are held treks in difficult areas, where the aspirants are left to fend on their own, making their arrangements themselves. “This gives courage.” IGP Singh stated.

He also spoke of waking up at the early hours of five a.m. and retiring to the night at seven thirty, the hours during with they had to undergo foot drills, arm drills, obstacles, etc. on the outdoor basis, and evidence, personality development, etc. courses on the indoors. After ten months of rigorous training as such, the force is sent to the states.

Metaphorically, IGP Jaspal Singh coined this as being thrown to the wolves, featuring how cruel and unforgiving the outside world can be. These people then had to serve at the district level for four or five months, after which they are given an independent charge of a locality.

The IGP recollected his first charge in Goa, unsurprising being anti – narcotic operations, what with Goa being the hype for booze and partying. He recalled then being made in charge of a traffic unit after which he became the SP South.

There is a theory in crime that no murder can be committed by a single person, there must be others who must help him with the supplies, let alone the happenings. During criminal trials, the role of Police is important. The evidence is to properly be put forth to the judge, the lapse of which will account in the lapse of conviction. Moreover, every convicted person has a right to appeal for justice higher up along the hierarchy, while only the President and Governor have the right or power to pardon.

Speaking of Intelligence, “Intelligence is basically a forewarning system, unless one has advanced information about antisocial elements,” the IGP stated. In survival, for political stability, countries collect information. External Intelligence deals with collecting information from other countries, preventing the sabotage of the integrity of India.
Giving a few examples of the work of the Intelligence Bureau, he spoke about students being used as proxy by political parties, being one of the important pressure groups ; as well as fighting with left wing extremists present in seven states, over whom the Government has no control.

An Agent Provocature is someone who incites a mob, overstepping the reasonable restrictions on Fundamental Rights. If the mob doesn’t disperse, the constitution enables the Police to use light force, a power necessary for regulation.

The talk terminated with how the Police Force is now much more sensitive to the needs of civilians, especially women, children and senior citizens, now that the educated lot of engineers, lawyers, post graduates etc. are joining the force, the force seems to be far more equipped.

The interaction ended with the much awaited Question and Answers session which was coordinated entirely by the Director of the Institute, Mr. Vyankatesh Prabhudesai. Mr. Singh, answered all the queries enthusiastically and with ease..

Inspiration may come to one in many ways, however, it takes a great man to inspire others. Just as IGP Jaspal Singh inspired the students he spoke to.
